Wigan Athletic
Founded: 1932
Ground: JJB Stadium, Wigan
Manager: Roberto Martinez
Under owner and Chairman Dave Whelan, Wigan Athletic have achieved a remarkable rise in the last decade to reach the Barclays Premiership.
When Whelan took over in 1995, Wigan were a poor club, finishing 19th in the Third Division. 10 years later, the Latics joined the elite of English football, gaining promotion to the Premier League.
The last couple of seasons have seen Wigan fighting to avoid relegation, and have been very successful in doing so. Since Steve Bruce was appointed mid-season Wigan looked a different team, and it was not surprising under his leadership they managed to stay up. Now, in the second year of Bruce at the helm, the Lancashire side will try to consolidate in mid-table. The arrival of Olivier Kapo and Egyptian striker Amr Zaki should help them in their quest.
Bottom Line: Wigan's biggest advantage is their home record. Now they have to come up with a way to collect some points on the road...
